Building a team
It´s a major and important challenge to build an effective team, made up of the right people. In a team everybody has to individually contribute and at the same time work together effectively. For this to work, one has to have a good notion of different team roles when building a team. Because the succes of a team depends on a right mix of individuals all with their own role behavior.
“Typically, most people have two or three Team Roles that they are most comfortable with and prefer; a few others that they can manage to cover if they need to; and finally the rest that they prefer not to adopt at all”
Functional roles and team roles
To truly understand why one team performs better than another, we must have a clear view on the difference between a functional role and a team role. The functional role can be regarded as the work someone´s doing or the tasks assigned when hired. Team members are generally chosen for certain expertise and experience, while hardly any attention is given to the person and whether the person is suitable for that specific role.
The team role comes in play as soon as we cooperate with others. It is the characteristic way someone behaves, contributes and positions himself in a group. There are 9 different team roles, that all matter separately and in accordance with each other. And no matter what the team is essentially, the team role will be manifest sooner or later.
A balanced team = an effective team
Organizations are too often looking for “the right person for the job”, whatever that job might be. That´s because they are in search of that one professional with the best credentials and the most talent. But individual talent does not always achieve the most. On top of that it is almost impossible for an individual to have all qualities needed for any job.
A well blended, balanced team on the other hand can harbor all qualities needed for the job or tasks. Finding the right people to insure you can blend an effective team, again sure can be huge challenge. To give some guidance, these are the qualities needed to be present for a team to be effective:
Systematic
Binding
Motivating
Creative
Energetic
Objective
Diplomatic
Punctual
Knowledgeable
In order to succeed building a team that comprises all the team roles, one should first have a sound understanding of all team roles and second be sure the team is a blend of all team roles, equally represented in that blend.

The Specialist is not on the picture because there is no team role interactions. A specialist comes in handy so now and then. Better to fly the specialist in then keep it on board of your ship when course is set.
